New domestic abuse offence for Northern Ireland

The Department of Justice confirmed the Westminster Domestic Abuse bill will be extended to Northern Ireland and would provide legislation to make coercive control an offence.

“The inclusion in the Bill of a domestic abuse offence for Northern Ireland will ensure that we can continue to protect victims and survivors of domestic abuse in Northern Ireland, in the  absence of a local Assembly.”
Peter May – Permanent Secretary, Department of Justice Northern Ireland

More information on what’s in the bill and how it relates to Northern Ireland can be found on the Home Office factsheet. Read it here Fact_Sheet_-_Domestic_Abuse_Northern_Ireland.Rev2
